Many sequels to "A Dream of Red Mansions" appeared in the Qing Dynasty, but most of them continued from Chapter 120 in the popular version, and some continued from the death of Lin Daiyu in the popular version.
There are several contemporary works that continue from Chapter 80 onwards, each with its own characteristics, but most of them are based on the author's free play.
This sequel is an attempt to restore the original meaning of Cao Xueqin's last twenty-eight chapters through careful reading of the text of the first eighty chapters and lost research.
Liu Xinwu believes that several necessary prerequisites for the continuation of this book are: "Dream of Red Mansions" was written by Cao Xueqin and commented by Zhi Yanzhai; Cao Xueqin has roughly completed the entire book of "Dream of Red Mansions", and the manuscript of the whole book is only missing a few parts and is still incomplete.
There was no time to unify the manuscript and remove some burrs that were inconsistent with the front and back; Cao Xueqin's entire book consists of 108 chapters; the first 80 chapters handed down are generally Cao Xueqin's original writing; the handwritten manuscripts handed down are generally believed to be trustworthy, and the text of the first 80 chapters is considered to be trustworthy.
It should be based on the ancient copies handed down by Hui School; the last 40 chapters of the 120-chapter version of "Dream of Red Mansions" are definitely not Cao Xueqin's original text; the 120-chapter "Dream of Red Mansions" that has been handed down to this day in cooperation with Cheng Weiyuan and Gao E was printed using movable type.
"Dream of Red Mansions" has a positive effect in promoting the first eighty chapters of Cao Xueqin; however, they left regrets in the changes to the ancient manuscripts of the first eighty chapters; and the next forty chapters basically violated Cao Xueqin's original intention.
; The complete version of "Dream of Red Mansions" written by Cao Xueqin has been circulated in a small area. Some of Cao Xueqin's contemporaries have read the complete version and left traces of it; this kind of accusation that Cao Xueqin himself was unwilling to publish it after eighty chapters
There is no basis for the idea that the manuscript was destroyed after it survived. It can be seen from the comments of Zhi Yanzhai that Cao Xueqin and Zhi Yanzhai cherished the manuscript after the 80th chapter very much, and were saddened by the "lost readers"; although Cao Xueqin's manuscript
The last twenty-eight chapters have not been found so far, but they can be traced through anecdotes; in the first eighty handed down chapters, "the gray line of grass and snakes stretches thousands of miles", and the contents of the last twenty-eight chapters in the handed down commentaries are
Many revelations and teasers, as well as some other information, are the resources of Tan Yi. Based on the results of Tan Yi, we can try to use Cao Xueqin's ideas, thoughts, and style to continue writing the twenty-eight chapters after the eighty.
For detailed arguments on the premise of the above continuation, please refer to "Looking at the Moon in Red Mansions" and "Liu Xinwu Revealing the Secret of "Dream of Red Mansions"", Parts 1-4, and "The True Story after the Eighty Chapters of "Dream of Red Mansions" written by Liu Xinwu.
Liu Xinwu continued to write "Dream of Red Mansions", "planned for a long time."
Since the publication of the first article on the study of "Dream of Red Mansions" in 1990, after twenty years, in addition to focusing on exploring the mystery of the text of "Dream of Red Mansions" starting from Qin Keqing, and publishing a large number of red texts, from 2005 to 2010
In 2006, he recorded and broadcast 61 episodes of a series on "Dream of Red Mansions" on CCTV's "Hundred Forum", and wrote three novellas "The Death of Qin Keqing", "The Death of Jia Yuanchun" and "The Death of Miaoyu" using contemporary language and style.
, to reflect the thinking at that time.
These are all training for the next twenty-eight chapters.
The twenty-eight chapters that have been continued now retain the essence formed in the above military training, while at the same time abandoning many of the original ideas. In retrospect, the sequel is the same as "The True Story after the Eighty Chapters of "A Dream of Red Mansions""
There have been a number of important changes and adjustments.
Twenty years of hard work have been extraordinary, and achieving this wish is the greatest joy in my life.
In order to make the reading feel as close as possible to the Cao style, this continuation book matches the text of the first eighty chapters. Some characters, words, and sentences are based on the text of the first eighty chapters. It does not adopt modern Chinese writing methods, nor does it strictly follow modern Chinese.
Grammar stipulates that if there is no "she", "na" and other writing methods that became popular after the vernacular movement in the last century, "it" is not used to refer to inanimate things. "Need" and "Xu" are written in the form of "Xu".
"Zuo" is written in the way of "zuo", and "very" and "ru" are sometimes written in the way of "ru". Modern Chinese grammar does not follow the rules for the use of "的, 地, 德", "的" and "地"
Use more ways of writing "的", etc., which will not be repeated here. Readers can understand by analogy when reading.
The text of the first eighty chapters in this sequel is all based on the ancient manuscripts. If there are different texts in the ancient manuscripts, you can choose according to your own understanding. In most cases, I agree with the choices made by Mr. Zhou Ruchang based on multiple ancient manuscripts.
For example, the two writing methods of "栊cui'an" and "Luancui'an" should be chosen as "Longcui'an", and the two writing methods of "Yi Zai Fu Huang Liang" and "Yi Zai Fu Huang Liang" should be chosen as "Huang Liang", etc.;
There are also differences with Mr. Zhou. For example, he thinks that the "indigo" in Chapter 30 should be "beautiful child" and the "bihen" of Baoyu's girl should be "bilang". I still use "indigo".
Bihen", etc.
Readers are advised not to "correct" this continuation by using the 120 copies of the annotated version of the Chinese Academy of Arts' Dream of Red Mansions Research Institute published by the People's Literature Publishing House. I think that version has many problems, such as the words "frozen bergamot in wax oil".
"Jing changed" to "wax oil jelly bergamot", big mistake! "Wax oil jelly" is a precious stone, how can wax products be confused with it? (Some ancient books write the variant character "興" for " wax", which shows that it is definitely not
"Wax".) We hope readers will pay attention to various other differences.
This sequel is a product of this era and this place. Therefore, in the typography, unless otherwise necessary, simplified characters will be used, and new punctuation will be used in accordance with contemporary local standards.
