The school originated from the Guilin Geology School established in Guangxi by the former Ministry of Heavy Industry in 1956. In 1978, it was renamed Guilin Institute of Metallurgical Geology. In 1986, it obtained the qualification of a master's degree authorization unit. In 1993, it was renamed Guilin Institute of Technology. In 1998, it was restructured into a central and local institution.
It was founded in 2009 and was renamed Guilin University of Technology in 2009. In 2013, it obtained doctorate degree authorization qualification.
