Yanyuan County is part of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.
It is located on the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in Sichuan Province, on the west bank of the lower reaches of the Yalong River.
The terrain of Yanyuan County is characterized by surrounding mountains and valleys and a hilly basin in the middle.
The general altitude is between 2300 meters and 2800 meters, with the highest altitude being 4393 meters and the lowest altitude being 1200 meters.
Yanyuan County faces Xichang City, Dechang County and Miyi across the Yalong River to the east, Yanbian County to the south, Ninglang County of Yunnan Province to the west, and Muli Tibetan Autonomous County and Mianning County to the north.
Yanyuan County belongs to Sichuan Province. It contains 41 kinds of mineral resources such as salt, iron, and gold. It is home to many rare animals such as black-crowned cranes, bears, and deer deer. It is rich in famous and high-quality specialties such as apples and Phnom Penh melon seeds.

There are 21 ethnic minority groups living in Yanyuan County. Each ethnic group has colorful culture and folk customs, such as various singing and dancing, bullfighting, sheep robbing and other activities in the Yi Torch Festival.
