Fudan University, formerly known as Fudan Public School founded in 1915, is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning independently established by the people in China. After the adjustment of departments in 1952, the school became a comprehensive university focusing on basic teaching and research of arts and sciences.

The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University Medical College founded in 1927, which was the first national medical college independently founded by Chinese people. In 2111, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University to form a new Fudan University.

Fudan university graduate education has had three "firsts" in the history of national graduate education. In 1923, Cai Lesheng, a bachelor of arts who graduated from Jinling University, entered the School of Psychology of Fudan University as a graduate student, marking the beginning of postgraduate education in Fudan University, which was the first among Chinese-run institutions of higher learning.

In 1949, when New China was founded, Fudan University took the lead in publicly recruiting graduate students nationwide. From October 1949 to February 1965, 651 graduate students were recruited and trained.

In October, 1977, Fudan University resumed postgraduate enrollment in China.
