Liu, the earliest Liu originated from Liu Lei, the descendant of Yao, so Liu Lei was the ancestor of Liu. Liu Lei is Yao's grandson. In his early years, Liu Lei learned from his father Dong Fu that he was a royal dragon.

About 1879 BC, in the summer of Emperor Kong Jia's reign, the dragon fell from the sky in Longdanggou, the southeast corner of Qililongcheng in Linying County, Henan Province. Kong Jia sent Liu Lei here to raise dragons for seven years. Because of Liu Lei's meritorious service in raising and protecting dragons, Kong Jia named him a royal dragon family and played Wei Guojun.

After the death of a female dragon, Tired processed the dragon meat into delicious food and gave it to Kong Jia. Kong Jia enjoyed it and thought it was delicious, so he asked Liu Lei for food.

Liu Lei was afraid of the death of the dragon, and Kong Jia made him take the responsibility, so that in about 1873 BC, Liu Lei moved to the eastern foot of Yaoshan (Dalongshan). Lushan County, Henan Province now lives in seclusion, and its original name has been changed to Qiu, Qiu Gong and Qiu Miyagi.

Kong Jia know, no longer pursue, Qiu Gong changed it to Liu Lei. Liu Lei's clansman changed his surname to Liu, and China's surname Liu Lei flourished. As early as before the Ming Dynasty, later generations dubbed Ji Geng Town (called Zhuyuzhai in ancient times) near Qiugongcheng as "the hometown of Jilong" and inscribed it on the forehead of Xizhaimen.

Liu Lei finally died in Qiu Gongcheng, Lushan County, Henan Province, and was buried 30 meters northeast of Qiu Gongcheng. In 1950s, when Zhaoping Lake was built, Liu Lei's tomb was not in Zhaoping Lake.
