In the 10th year of Jiajing (153 1), the government of mian yang sent officials here to take charge of shipping affairs. In the 43rd year of Jiajing (1564), troops were stationed to prevent bandits. Since then, merchants have gathered and become increasingly prosperous. At the end of the Ming Dynasty, the Li Zicheng Rebel Army approached mian yang, and the government sent more troops to defend it, naming it "Xianzhenshao", and then set up an administrative agency here, named it "Xianzhenfu", forming a unified township. Later, it was named "Xiantao Town" and has been used ever since. 1952, mian yang county moved to Xiantao town. 1986 withdraw from the county to build the city, and the city is named after the county place name.

The only gymnastics town in China.

Xiantao has a long history and talented people come forth in large numbers. It is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese in China, the first county in the national college entrance examination and the only gymnastics hometown in China. In 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Xiantao City created the world sports myth of "one town, two champions, three gold medals and four medals". Xiantao is the only gymnastics town in China, with five world champions, including Li, Li Dashuang, Yang Wei, Zheng and Liao Hui, and has won seven Olympic gold medals and six Olympic silver medals for four consecutive Olympic Games.
