Swamp box turtles are like closed-shell turtles in China. It is said that some box turtles can close their shells to kill snakes, so some people call them snake-catching turtles. Swamp box turtle is one of the relatively medium-sized species, with dim carapace and few patterns.

The shell of swamp box turtle can grow to 16.8 cm. The carapace is dome-shaped, and the carapace is slender and oval. The color of carapace is mostly green, brown or brownish yellow.
