According to historical records, the earliest couplets-Spring Festival couplets appeared in the Five Dynasties. At present, this pair of Spring Festival couplets inscribed by Meng Min, a master of Houshu, is recognized as the first pair of Spring Festival couplets. At this point, antithesis rhetoric gave birth to the independent style of Spring Festival couplets.
By the Song Dynasty, the creation of couplets had become a common practice. Celebrities, Shi, Zhu and Huang Tingjian also have many couplets handed down.
Wang Anshi (1021-1086), a writer in the Northern Song Dynasty, described the scene of people posting Spring Festival couplets in the poem "January Day": one year old in the sound of firecrackers, and send warm enters Tu Su in the spring breeze.
