A one-act play for the Tang Dynasty that cannot go back
The Tang Dynasty was the most important period in Chinese history At that time, people from all over the world gathered in Chang'an, and culture, politics, economy, and science and technology all reached an unprecedented state of prosperity. Even in the "Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms" period of the later generations, the imprint of the "Han and Tang Dynasties" still lingers.
"Han Xizai's Night Banquet" by Gu Hongzhong of the Southern Tang Dynasty
The famous painting "Han Xizai's Night Banquet" is a glimpse into the Tang Dynasty's style and people, and it is also a well-known immersive cultural sensory restaurant in Shanghai. ——The source of inspiration for "Good Setting·Night Banquet". It starts with the melodious pipa tune, and the dance gradually gets better, and the music and prostitutes play to bring the atmosphere to a climax. At the end, the song ends with a scene of guests at a banquet at the house of a scholar-bureaucrat in the Tang Dynasty, enjoying the music and singing, following the rut of the millennium. , coming towards you.
"We hope that through such a space, people can have a multi-faceted immersive experience and feel Chinese culture and the past and present Chinese lifestyle." Designer Wang Yang said.
▲Cross-border designer Wang Yang was interviewed
Taking the prosperous Tang Dynasty as its source, it integrates traditional Chinese culture, food, music, dance, and opera, and uses multimedia art forms to display it. This is the collision of technology and art, creating a multi-layered sensory "artistic conception".
As Wang Yang said, this is not an ordinary dinner, but a play, a dream, and a movie.
Overture: Penglai Scenic Spot
With bottles, lamps and candles, you enter paradise.
"The house is built in a human environment, without the noise of cars and horses." This is the leisurely state described by Tao Yuanming, and it is also the poetic hometown that modern people living in the noisy city yearn for. But in comparison, what Liangshe Night Banquet wants to present seems to be a kind of "dream", a kind of "glitz" far away from the ordinary world.
The predecessor of Liangshe Night Banquet was a century-old factory hidden among the old buildings on Shaanxi North Road. Before designing this dream of the Tang Dynasty, designer Wang Yang combined his own experience in studying historical materials , and built its outline bit by bit in my mind. Finally, its true identity was found in a quiet place amidst the hustle and bustle.
▲ Pushing the door and entering, the Tang Dynasty-style building on the background wall of the front hall comes into view. The frame of the building itself can still be vaguely seen. Originally, the entire space was separated by floors. After reconstruction and demolition, This formed the current high-ceiling atrium.
▲At night, the lights are on, the light and shadow rise, the flying cranes dance in the clouds, the red mist floats into the sky, and an epic scene from the Tang Dynasty is about to be staged.
Japan is the place with the most complete preservation of ancient buildings from the Tang Dynasty. In order to complete a realistic reproduction, Wang Yang and his team went to Nara, Japan, restored many architectural models, and finally presented them with 3D printing technology.
▲ The curtain panel with all-copper hollow design allows you to clearly see the movement and movement of the outside, as well as the flow of people, but you cannot get a glimpse of the inside of the restaurant from the outside. Under the sunlight, the projections are mottled, large or small, becoming a pleasant shade.
Paragraph 2: Empathy creates the environment
One step at a time, one scene at a time, and you will gradually enter a better state.
"Where is the beautiful scenery in a good time, and who has the courtyard to enjoy the pleasure?" In traditional Chinese aesthetics, whether it is poetry, painting or courtyard structure, "creating artistic conception" is an artistic pursuit. . In Good Design Night Banquet, the designer wants to present the home of an ancient scholar-bureaucrat. From the front hall, corridors, pavilions, pavilions, reception rooms, restaurants, tea rooms...every step of the way, you can see the beautiful scenery. .
▲Elevator. Different from traditional restaurants where you can sit down immediately after entering the door, the overall flow of the night banquet is divided according to different functions such as resting, immersive dinner, watching performances, and drinking tea. When a guest enters this place, the first step is to take the elevator to the second floor, encounter pavilions and pavilions, pass through a long corridor, and finally become a guest of the host's family.
▲Corridor on the second floor. "Many guests have been able to naturally integrate into the scenery. They take pictures everywhere they go. There are courtyards and pavilions. Maybe the guests will inadvertently see a character in the opera appearing here." Wang Yang tried to pass Lighting, color and multimedia effects are used to create a "traveling" feeling, which is a true "hidden in the city" artistic conception.
▲Step by step, guests follow the movement and gradually enter the "dream" created by the host.
▲On a clear day, the sunlight shines in through the hollow curtain wall, and the shadows of pavilions, towers, mountains and clouds overlap and set off each other, as if fairy music is floating, showing a simplicity and classicness. .
▲In creating the overall atmosphere, Wang Yang chose "Chinese Red" as the background color, supplemented by the artistic presentation of lighting, to create a modern and fashionable "Chinese style", which can be freely switched between a variety of colors The pattern lighting system visually creates an immersive sensory experience for the restaurant.
▲The spire of a century-old house is one of Wang Yang’s favorite places. The spire always gives people unlimited artistic reverie and expansion of thinking. The original old wood is used and renovated to give people a brand-new feeling, rather than blindly pursuing "oldness".
The designer re-cast the cement columns of the original factory building and polished them to form a visual sense of "using the old to make the old". A row of columns separates the corridor and the reception room, and the mottled column surfaces It also transports my thoughts back to that era thousands of years ago.
▲At the end of the reception space is a whole mirror, which enhances the depth of field in the space. There are invisible doors on both sides of the mirror, leading to the bathroom and kitchen respectively. Sometimes, a chef show is held here, and the curtain above the mirror falls, and this is another space for small events.
▲The wall of the living room is a "Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains" composed of pixels. "Originally, this wall was full of windows, but the view outside the window was not particularly good, so I hoped to turn it into a wall to show a long scroll of landscape." Wang Yang said, through the use of perforated plates, the picture was pixelated. The processing, on the contrary, presents a confusing and vague artistic conception.
▲There are many furnishings on site, derived from the "good design" of the brand store originally created by Wang Yang. Although the artifacts are beautiful, it is still very difficult to directly integrate them into contemporary people's lives. The Chinese people's love for food seems to be a spiritual pursuit engraved in their bones.
Wang Yang decided to use "eating" as a medium, from the open kitchen of "Good Design" to the multimedia immersive dining experience in "Good Design·Night Banquet" today, using "banquet" to transform life Sublime it into a grand celebration and exploration, and feel how to improve the taste and quality of life.
Paragraph 3: The heart is in full bloom
Like flowers and beautiful families, the years pass like a fleeting time.
The entire dinner followed the preset context and had a clear script direction. During the tracing process, which lasted for more than 2 years, Wang Yang and his team conducted an exploration of Tang Dynasty historical materials and food culture. Some dishes retained their original names, and the designer explored their presentation methods from historical materials.
"For example, there were Tang Guozi in the Tang Dynasty. Japanese wagashi were passed down from the Tang Dynasty. Many people may not know much about it. In a dessert, we will tell you: the fruit comes from China's Tang Dynasty." Wang Yang said.
▲Corridor. The corridor leading up from the restaurant leads to another pavilion.
▲There is only one seat for 12 people for the night banquet every night. You can enjoy a thousand square meters of private space. You can book the venue or reserve a seat to share with friends who don’t know where you are from. meal. The dinner consists of 18 dishes, paired with 18 glasses of wine. Each dish is a corresponding fusion of food, vision, image, music, taste and emotion, as well as an imagination that leaps into Chinese aesthetics and culture.
▲The final chapter of the music scene is also the climax of the entire dinner. The gold bar symbolizing wealth "falls from the sky". This is the pinnacle of life and the end of the dream. The designer wants to tell visitors: everything in life is just like a dream.
Segment 4: Dreaming in the Garden
Drunken eyes, young and dreamy
Sometimes, after the guests finish eating, they will say, "I want to go back and learn Chinese culture." , "I want to bring my children to experience it in the future." For designers, it is always gratifying to hear this, "I feel that what I have done has had a certain effect. In today's environment, everyone also has some willingness and ideas to return to Chinese culture."
A few years ago, Wang Yang and his team launched the "Aesthetic Revival Project" to recreate Chinese aesthetics. In the Good Design Night Banquet, guests can experience some immersive performances, such as Kunqu Opera Afternoon Tea and contemporary art performances, which enhance Chinese people’s views on aesthetics from multiple dimensions.
▲After coming out of the restaurant, the next functional space is the small theater. The design imitates the ancient stage, where the guests are both viewers and part of the plot.
▲Guests can listen to the elegant libretto of Kun Opera and follow the graceful figures of the actors while tasting elegant tea and snacks.
▲Kun Opera actors are putting on makeup.
End of the curtain: all things return to one's heart
It will be difficult to say goodbye without the glitz.
After the hustle and bustle, the music ends and everyone disperses, and the guests will eventually return to their own lives. After leaving the small theater, we came to the last stop of this immersive experience: the collection and tea room. From entering the dream to coming out of the dream, it only takes 2-3 hours.
▲Tea room. It is a quiet and peaceful place where you can concentrate on meditation and get closer to your inner nature.
▲Collection area. Before leaving, take your favorite items home.
▲Open the doors and windows, and you will see the familiar world of mortals again. The elegance of the Tang Dynasty seems to have been separated from the world, and it has been stuck in the interaction of drinking and drinking just now.
Designer Q&A
1. Why use the culture of the Tang Dynasty to create such an immersive cultural sensory restaurant?
Answer: The Tang Dynasty was a very glorious era in ancient China. It was also very tolerant and reminded me of China today. During the "good design" period, designers, directors, producers, musicians, investors... friends from all walks of life will come to the party, and sometimes everyone will cook a dish to form a "banquet" .
Once, I was chatting with a group of directors and thought about whether we could create a more in-depth space. In addition to feeling food and the utensils we want to convey, we could also play a certain role in it? From this, the idea of ??"good design and night banquet" was born.
2. What relevant historical research did you do before taking shape?
Answer: In "Good Design", we have luncheons, dinners, and a "collection" section, where we put a collection of products we think are good on our platform. The entire project took three years from planning to opening. We read hundreds of books related to the Tang Dynasty, including recipes.
3. Many places, such as roofs, beams and columns, are not "renovated as before", but instead show a new sense of fashion. What is the reason for this?
Answer: When conveying Chinese culture, we cannot always be "retro". We hope that more young people will be willing to accept Chinese culture, and that it will be open to the whole world. Some expressions are also liked by foreigners, subverting their ancient and outdated stereotypes of Chinese culture.
