Poetry of Diet, Zhihu.
The puffer fish has been favored by people since ancient times because of its tender meat, delicious taste and rich nutrition. Mei Yaochen, a poet in the Northern Song Dynasty, once wrote a five-character poem "Fan Raozhou eats puffer fish", describing this kind of food, and later generations nicknamed him "Mei Puffer".

In spring, the waterside of Xiaozhou breeds new buds of grass, willows spit on the shore and flowers fly.

The puffer fish is listed at this time, and the price is high, which exceeds all fish and shrimp.

The puffer fish looks strange enough, and there is no food to eat.

Big belly like a big pig, prominent eyes, and like a frog in Wu area.

This kind of cooking, if you don't eat it carefully, will be killed immediately, like a sword of slaughter.

If you lose your body, you don't need to have teeth.

When southerners asked about it, the party began to praise it again.

All words are beautiful. Who says death is like hemp?

I can't refute them, think twice, and feel at a loss in the face of surprises.

When you return to Chaoyang, you will be afraid to eat snakes in cages.

Not long after Liu Zongyuan arrived in Liuzhou, he ate a frog and it was calm.

Snakes and frogs are strange and disgusting in shape, but they have nothing to do with human life and have no fear.

The puffer fish taste more than them, but the hidden evil is endless.

Beautiful things must be evil, too. This old saying is not bad at all.

One day, the great writer Fan Zhongyan entertained guests, and Mei was invited to dinner. During the dinner, someone vividly described the delicacy of puffer fish, which aroused Mei's great interest. He wrote this poem and recorded the scene at that time.

The first four periods of the poem show the time and value of puffer fish's listing: in spring, the buds are born on the small continent near the water, and the willows on the shore are blooming all over the sky. The puffer fish is on the market at this time, and the price is expensive, surpassing all fish and shrimp.

The next eight poems describe the strangeness and poison of puffer fish with a turning point. The puffer fish has a bigger abdomen than other fish. It has an air bag, which can inhale and inflate. Its eyes are prominent and close to the top of the head, so its shape is strange and looks disgusting to the poet. Even more frightening is that the liver and other parts of puffer fish contain toxins. If it is not handled properly, people will be poisoned and die soon after eating it. Eating puffer fish is like a sword piercing the heart, so the poet is resistant to eating puffer fish. "Why bother to install teeth?"

However, fear of death is not "eating goods". The poet thinks that puffer fish should not be eaten since it is so poisonous, but southerners say it is delicious, and so many people remain silent about poisoning.

When Han Yu came to Chaoyang, he was afraid to eat snakes at first. After Liu Zongyuan arrived in Liuzhou, he soon ate toads calmly. Snakes and toads are also strange and disgusting in shape, but they are not harmful to human life, so there is no need to be afraid, while puffer fish are not. "The hidden disasters are endless."

Finally, the poet came to the conclusion that something too beautiful must be evil, and this sentence of the ancients is not bad at all.

This poem about puffer fish food is also an allusion to people in the world who disregard life and integrity for fame and fortune.
