It used to be the location of Zhangjia Garden, a famous public entertainment place in Shanghai in modern times, also known as "Insect Garden", and later it evolved from1920s to191930s. It is rich in human history and can be described as an extremely precious urban and architectural heritage resource in Shanghai. Since 1885, Bird has been open to tourists, initially free of charge. Soon, because there were too many tourists in the park, the charging standard became 10 cents per person. 1893 after the completion of Enron, it was changed to free, but there was a charge for setting up various service facilities.
The Historical Origin of Bird
Bird is located in the south of Nanjing West Road and west of Shimen 1st Road, and its former site is at the southern end of Taixing Road. This used to be a farmland. After the opening of Shanghai, many foreign businessmen came to Shanghai to do business. From 1872 to 1878, cannon, a British businessman and manager of Hutchison foreign firm, rented more than 20 mu of land from farmers Cao and Xu and transformed it into a garden house.
Later, the garden changed hands several times and was bought by Shanghai rich businessman Zhang Shuhe at 1882. Zhang called this garden "Weichong Garden" for short, which refers to the famous allusion of Zhang Hanlin's seclusion in the mountains and forests during the Jin Dynasty.
