Can’t lay people give food?
Question: Many Buddhist friends advise me not to give food, but I feel that hungry ghosts are quite pitiful. I think Ksitigarbha’s teacher advises everyone not to give food. Maybe he is afraid that people who give food will not follow the law and attract ghosts, right?
If I give food every day, will there be many hungry ghosts waiting for me to give food to my house every day, or will they really follow me all the time?
Exchange and discussion: Buddha is perfect omniscience and supreme enlightenment.
If you are a disciple of Buddha, then believe in the Buddha’s teachings of Chrysostom.
Regarding the advice of ordinary people in the world or the views on Dharma, we should all analyze and judge based on "according to the law and not to others".
In Buddhist scriptures, such as the Dharani Sutra for Saving the Hungry Ghosts, the Dharani Mantra for Saving Hungry Ghosts, the Dharani Mantra for Saving the Hungry Ghosts, the Dharani Mantra for Saving Hungry Ghosts, and the Great Dharani Sutra for Giving the Nectar to Hungry Ghosts, etc.
, the Buddha asked his disciples to give food to the lower realms, and even encouraged boys and girls to do so ("The Buddha Says Giving to Hungry Ghosts the Sweet Dharani Sutra" contains a passage: Good man. If there is a bhikkhu, bhikshuni, upasaka upasika
Boys, girls, and humans and gods. Those who wish to accept this method must call upon all the hungry ghosts and gods in the ten directions to do so. This includes those who do not believe in the Buddha.
, those who have not taken refuge and received the precepts), and clearly indicate that those who give food to perform this great compassion, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions will bless and praise, and the heavenly dragons and good gods of the ten directions will protect and help. The merits of those who give food can also quickly achieve the supreme Bodhi.
Master Yinguang once gave a teaching: "Why shouldn't lay people remember Mengshan Mountain? This is the universal bond between lonely souls. The small one is Mengshan Mountain, the middle one is Yankou, and the big one is water and land. It's the same thing. They often form bonds with lonely souls.
If you don't dare to read it, it will attract ghosts. If there are no ghosts in the place, there will be no ghosts in your house. There are hundreds of thousands of times more ghosts than people.
If you are afraid of ghosts, you should accumulate virtue and do good deeds, and the ghosts will respect and protect you. If a person does something dark, the ghosts will tease him, so it will be difficult for him to be lucky.
. This kind of ghost is a kind ghost. If people come, they will move away. If a bad ghost finds it, it will be very unlucky. If you are sincere, you should obey the Buddha's instructions even if you are a bad ghost.
, it will no longer be serious. Therefore, if any illness caused by karma cannot be cured by medical treatment, it can be quickly cured by reciting the Buddha's name and Guanyin sincerely. However, the ghost of grievance will be reborn in a good way and disappear in front of everyone.
There are many good ghosts or evil ghosts. People who are afraid of ghosts should have good intentions, say good things, and do good deeds. All the ghosts will become protective people. The more ghosts the better, so why not be afraid?
"May you firmly believe in the Buddha's teachings, protect your compassion, always practice charity, and benefit all sentient beings.
Appendix: Brother Liu’s blog post about giving food: Many brothers dare not give food because they are afraid of ghosts and gods, and even use their own assumptions to discourage others from giving food. This is a very wrong view.
It not only misleads oneself, but also hinders many sentient beings from seeking liberation.
There are clear instructions in the Buddhist scriptures that all monks and lay people can give food.
For example, "The Oral Sutra of Saving the Flames": "Bhikkhus, bhikshunis, Upasakas, and Upasikas recite this secret saying, and if they have sufficient good roots, all non-human beings, yakshas and rakshasas, and evil ghosts and gods will not dare to harm them."
The alms givers here include Upasakas and Upasikas, which we usually call lay disciples.
Moreover, it is clearly stated in the sutra that when giving food, all evil ghosts and gods dare not harm you, so there is no need to worry about ghosts and gods at all.
Let us look back and think about it: the sufferings of all beings in the realm of hungry ghosts are profound. They cannot seek life or death, nor can they seek relief from their sufferings.
How many of my parents, children, relatives and friends, as well as those who have been dependent on each other and loved by me, are all waiting eagerly for help from you, a relative who practices Buddhism.
When we give food once, we can quench their extreme hunger and thirst. On top, we can transcend the sufferings of the three lower realms. We can do nothing with just a little effort. We are deeply afraid of harming ourselves even when we give food. This is obviously what a Buddhist disciple should do.
Compassion is contrary to compassion.
Compassion becomes empty words when it comes to action.
Without fear and full of fear, where is the magnanimity of Buddhist disciples?
Before giving food, you will respectfully ask for blessings from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. With a single thought of compassion, humans and gods will respond. Dragons, heavenly protectors, and Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will all bless the person who gives food. How can disaster happen to you?
As the "Amrita Flavor Sutra" says: "At that time, all the Buddhas in the ten directions appeared in the land to praise the practitioner from a distance and again taught him the memory of Bodhi from afar; all the Bodhisattvas were happy and thought about it, and all the heavenly and dragons each brought fragrant flowers, necklaces, and various kinds of
Those who perform tricks far away".
The Buddha is the one who speaks the truth, the one who speaks the truth, the one who does not lie, and the one who does not speak in different ways.
The "Medicine Master Sutra" says: "This sun and moon wheel can cause it to fall, and the King of Miao Gao Mountain can cause it to tilt. It is no different from what the Buddhas said."
If you think you can get hungry ghosts, won't you get the blessings of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Dragon Heavenly Protectors?
The induction and supernatural powers of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas naturally far exceed those of ghosts and gods.
What's more, if one's heart is upright, good gods will always be around; if one's heart is not kind, evil gods and ghosts will always be with you.
Evil minds give birth to dark ghosts, while good minds bring forth light.
Giving food is the act of a Bodhisattva, and is naturally protected by the heavenly guardians.
What's more, as a Buddhist disciple, you should have the courage to go through fire and water in order to save sentient beings from suffering.
Even if things go wrong, as long as all sentient beings benefit, there is nothing to fear!
If I don’t go to hell, who will? Some people believe that once you do almsgiving for the first time, you need to do it every day.
This is also an incorrect view. I have never heard of the saying that if you give charity once, you will be in debt every day.
