The reason why Du Fu’s death is said to be an encounter between beef and fine wine is because it was these two delicacies that led to Du Fu’s death. There are generally two theories about this: (1) Du Fu He died suddenly because he had not eaten for a long time. After getting beef and liquor, he overate and died suddenly; (2) After Du Fu got a large amount of beef and liquor, he stored the meat. However, the weather was hot and the meat became rotten. After the bad meat, Du Fu passed away.
Died from overdose
Du Fu, a poet saint, worried about the country and the people throughout his life and wrote countless classic poems. However, in his later years, Du Fu was in an extremely miserable situation, especially his death. It is even more embarrassing. There is a saying that the great poet died after eating a lot of beef and white wine.
According to legend, in the summer of 770 AD, the impoverished Du Fu traveled to Leiyang, Hunan Province. Unexpectedly, he encountered a huge flood, which trapped the old Du Fu in Leiyang. He had no food for nearly ten days. After retreating, the magistrate of Leiyang County learned that Du Fu had arrived and encountered difficulties, so he went to visit him with a large amount of beef and liquor. Du Fu, who had been hungry for several days, died suddenly after eating too much beef and liquor.
There is such a record in "Miscellaneous Records of the Ming Emperor" written by Zheng Chujie of the Tang Dynasty: Du Fu visited Leiyang and visited Yue Temple. The flood came suddenly, and there was no food for ten days. The county magistrate prepared a boat to welcome him. He was given some white wine to roast cattle, but he drank too much and died overnight? The old and new "Book of Tang" also recognizes this statement, which shows that Du Fu's death is likely to be the reason.
Eating spoiled beef
Another theory about Du Fu's death is also related to beef and liquor, but it is no longer due to excessive consumption, but because it was used to spoil Bad beef.
In the Tang Dynasty, many people did not believe that a great poet would be strangled to death. One example of this is that Du Fu himself once wrote a poem in Leiyang, in which he said that the magistrate of Leiyang County was drowned in the flood. I am extremely grateful for finding myself and giving him food and wine. Because there were so many of them, it was impossible for Du Fu to eat them all at once and store them to survive the difficult period of the flood.
Therefore, it is very likely that the stored beef has deteriorated, and Du Fu himself was already suffering from a serious illness, which eventually led to his death in a foreign country.
