In the east of Donghai Town, Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, there is a beautiful fishing village called Xunpu Village. Xunpu Village was developed as early as the Tang and Song Dynasties and has a history of more than 1000 years. It is said that it is the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. Xunpu Village, located at the mouth of Jinjiang River downstream of Quanzhou Bay, is a coastal fishing village with fishery economy as the mainstay and industry, agriculture and commerce as the mainstay.
In Xunpu village, there are a group of fishermen's women, who are descendants of ancient Arabs. They are industrious and beautiful, and live in characteristic houses built with oyster shells. They are Xunpu women. Xunpu women put their hair behind their heads, tied it into a bun, and then strung flowers into a wreath and wrapped it around the bun, commonly known as the hairpin circle. At present, Xunpu women's characteristic clothing has become a national intangible cultural heritage.
Xunpu village history and culture
The headdress of Xunpu women wearing hairpin rings and ivory chopsticks has spread from Central Asia since the Song Dynasty. Xunpu is an important port at the starting point of Quanzhou Maritime Silk Road.
Most merchant ships loaded with silk and porcelain set sail from Xunpu, sailed along the coast of southern Fujian to Nanyang, passed through the Indian Ocean and the east coast of Africa, and then unloaded at the north shore. When returning, if there is no cargo in the cabin, an empty ship will be formed, and the unstable center of gravity is not conducive to navigation, so the crew put the shells scattered by the sea on the ship and ballast them, and then pile them up at the seaside of Xunpu.
