Qingdao, Shandong Province is a famous seaside resort city in northern China, located in the south of Shandong Peninsula, and is an important central city in coastal areas. The whole city is called "Oriental Switzerland", which attracts many tourists every year. After entering Qingdao by train, Shanshan visited the nearest Qingdao Railway Station in China, felt the street beer culture in Qingdao, tasted the "wild wonton" in Qingdao, and shared the breakfast sweets that were not worthy of the name (interested friends can read the previous articles). Today, I will continue my trip to Qingdao and share a century-old food street: Pichai Yuan.
When traveling to Qingdao, "Pichai Yuan" must be a punch-in point for tourists. "Pichai Yuan" belongs to Zhongshan Road, Qingdao, and is the "starting point" of Qingdao's modern urban planning and construction. A large number of historical buildings and relics are preserved in this area, which is the historical bearing place of Qingdao and the embodiment of Qingdao's urban characteristics.
There are two theories about the origin of the name "Pichai Yuan". The first is that this place used to be a firewood chopping city, where firewood was sold. Later, people followed it and called it "chopping wood city" When the road and surrounding buildings were completed, it was named "Pichai Yuan". The second argument is based on Liu Yun's "Qingdao Hundred Songs", in which Pichai Yuan was named because many temporary commercial "woodhouses" were built.
When Shanshan followed the navigation to Pichaiyuan, the shopping area of Zhongshan Road in Qingdao, it was really easy to miss the intersection of Pichaiyuan, and the street entrance into Pichaiyuan was really small, so if you don't pay attention, you will miss it. Looking up at the corner, the words "Pichaiyuan 1902" were written at the entrance. 1902 is the year when Pichai Institute was built. The original road here is called Jiangning Road, which is the ancient name of Nanjing. It can also be understood that this is the earliest "Nanjing Road" in Qingdao. The street layout in Pichai Yuan is cloth-shaped, with Zhongshan Road in the east, Beijing Road in the north and Tonghe North Road in the west. The whole street is not long, and you can visit it in about 1 hour without eating.
When Shanshan entered Pichai Garden, it was quite popular because it was a holiday. Tourists keep coming in, and even see someone dragging a suitcase in the street. Some people come in to taste the snacks here, some people come to look for local snacks in Qingdao, and some people just come here to take pictures as a souvenir. At this time, the three girls in Shanshan can no longer appreciate the ancient buildings on both sides of the block. They have been attracted by the snacks on both sides of the road.
There are snacks along the street in Pichai Yuan. Because it is a coastal city, seafood is definitely the first protagonist, such as grilled oysters, grilled squid, steamed eggs with sea urchins, grilled shrimp, little seafood and so on. In addition, there are pot stickers, bean curd, kebabs, wonton, bean jelly, stinky tofu, handmade jiaozi, Daoxiao Noodles and so on. Of course, there are all kinds of drinks, and beer in Qingdao is essential. After shopping all over the street, Shanshan bought a steamed egg of sea urchin at a price of 15 yuan, which was not bad.
I don't know if it takes care of the tastes of tourists from all over the world. Although there are some local snacks in Pichai Yuan, the proportion is not much. On the contrary, the delicious food from all over the country is dazzling. Walking always feels that the whole food street is familiar, similar to food streets in other cities. I think food streets are always like this. They are designed for tourists. In order to satisfy the tastes of tourists from all over the world, all local delicacies are concentrated here. No matter which city you come from, you can always find the corresponding local snacks in Pichai Yuan.
Although Shanshan was warned to be careful of being cheated when I went to the food street before I came, I still walked all the way down. Although the price in Pichai Yuan was slightly higher than that outside, the price was clearly marked on the booth, which was very enthusiastic. I didn't feel cheated. One of the steamed stuffed bun vendors saw that I was from Guangzhou and chatted with me in Guangzhou dialect. When I met my hometown in a foreign land, I felt particularly cordial.
In addition to snacks, in fact, the Liyuan Building in Pichai Yuan is also very distinctive. However, along the way, I only remember a place called "Jiangning Hall", and all the others walked away. In the end, I didn't even remember my name. Maybe too many shops have gathered together and become a city. Although it is prosperous, it is not noticeable.
After a tour, it was getting late and I went back to the inn to have a rest. At the entrance of the inn, the enthusiastic proprietress asked me where I went to play today. When I answered Pichai Yuan, the proprietress who was born and raised in Qingdao began to open the floodgates again. From her mouth, she learned some light and shadow of Pichaiyuan in the past: Pichaiyuan was once the most concentrated place for commerce, catering and entertainment in Qingdao, and it was the place where Qingdao people were most willing to linger. In the past, Qingdao people loved Pichai Garden, which once became a place full of the most popular customs in Qingdao.
The proprietress added: Later, I don't know when I started, and I was no longer interested in visiting Pichai Garden. Those old shops gradually disappear, leaving only snacks, which are usually neglected. When it comes to holidays, it becomes a tourist street, and the original feeling can't be found.
After returning to Guangzhou from Qingdao, Shanshan has been paying attention to Qingdao. She recently noticed that the relevant departments of Qingdao will upgrade and expand the Pichai Yuan area. As a tourist, she is very much looking forward to the transformation. If she has the chance to visit Qingdao again, she will definitely visit the renovated "Pichai Yuan".
So, have you ever traveled to Qingdao? Have you been to Pichai Yuan, the once "most popular food street" in Qingdao? Do you like the food and snacks here? Do you think the food street should retain more local characteristics? What should Pichai Yuan look like in your mind? If you have the chance, will you go to Pichai Yuan in Qingdao?
