The name Zigong originates from two ancient salt wells, "Artesian Well" and "Gongjing". In August of the 28th year of the Republic of China (1939), with the approval of the Sichuan Provincial Government, the salt-producing areas of the 5th District of Fushun County and the 2nd District of Rong County were designated. The first characters of Ziliujing and Gongjing were collectively called Zigong City.

Historical evolution:

In the Qin Dynasty, Fushun and Rongxian areas belonged to Bajun and Shujun respectively.

In the Han Dynasty, Jianwei County was established. Fushun area belonged to Jiangyang County, Jianwei County, and Rong County belonged to Nan'an County, Jianwei County. During the reign of Emperor Zhang of the Eastern Han Dynasty, well salt was produced in the Zigong area. The famous salt wells include Fushi Well and Dagong Well.

During the reign of Emperor Wu of the Northern Zhou Dynasty, a county was set up as a town due to salt. Fushi County was established in the name of Fushijing; Gongjing Town was established in the name of Dagongjing.

In the Tang Dynasty, Fushi County was renamed Fuyi County; Shenggongjing Town was renamed Gongjing County, under the jurisdiction of Rongzhou.

In the Song Dynasty, Gongjing County was abandoned and moved into Rongde County.

In the Ming Dynasty, Fuyi County was renamed Fushun County, and Rongzhou was reduced to a county. During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, the Fushun salt production center moved westward, and new artesian wells were opened.

During the Anti-Japanese War, the coastal areas fell, and Sichuan Salt once again helped Chu. In order to meet the needs of economic development and wartime military supplies, civilian food and support for the Anti-Japanese War, the Nationalist Government decided to establish a city.

In August of the 28th year of the Republic of China (1939), with the approval of the Sichuan Provincial Government, the salt-producing areas of the fifth district of Fushun County and the second district of Rong County were drawn from the first characters of Ziliujing and Gongjing. Collectively known as Zigong City. On September 1 of the same year, the Zigong Municipal Government was established and affiliated to the Sichuan Provincial Government.

On December 5, 1949, Zigong City was liberated and placed under the jurisdiction of the Southern Sichuan Administrative Office.

In 1952, the Southern Sichuan Administration was abolished and placed under the Sichuan Provincial People's Government.

In April 1978, all of Rong County and six communes in Heshi District of Fushun County were placed under the jurisdiction of Zigong City.

In March 1983, all Fushun County was placed under the jurisdiction of Zigong City.

1. Cold-eating rabbit
