Shoushan stone carvings are carefully carved handicrafts made from pyrophyllite produced in Shoushan, Fujian. Shoushan stone carvings include figures, flowers and fruits, animals, landscapes, and seals. They are one of the "Three Treasures" of Fujian handicrafts (bodiless lacquerware, Shoushan stone carvings, and cork paintings).

Fujian Shoushan stone carvings are famous both at home and abroad for their long history and unique style. As far back as 1,500 years ago in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, our ancestors could use simple lines like hooks, halberds and sharp swords to carve burial carvings (such as Shoushan stone pigs) on Shoushan stone, which laid the foundation for Shoushan stone carving. After passing down the skills for several generations, Shoushan stone carving has developed from stone carvings to various creations such as seals, buttons, stationery, animals, figures, etc. It can also be designed according to the shape and quality of the stone and the materials used. In the Qing Dynasty, many famous craftsmen emerged in Shoushan stone carving.

During the Kangxi and Qianlong years, Yang Yuxuan and Zhou Shang were both famous stone carvers in Shoushan in central Fujian. The "Arhat Crouching with a Lion" now stored in the Palace Museum in Beijing was carved by Tian Huangshi, with the Chinese character "Yuxuan" written in inscriptions on the bottom. The character's expression is lifelike, and the work's knife skills are vigorous. It is really "the skill of wielding the knife is as good as a ghost's work." After Yang Yuxuan, Zhou Bin (also known as Shangjun) was good at seal button carving. The seal buttons he created were known as "Shangjun buttons" and became famous for a while. Their style was simple, mostly standing animals, and engraved with freehand landscapes.

During the Tongzhi and Guangxu years, there were Pan Yumao from Fengwei Township in Ximen, Lin Qianpei from Houyu Township in Dongmen, and their disciple Lin Yuanzhu. On the basis of inheriting Yang Yuxuan and Zhou Shangjun, they further innovated. Two artistic schools of Shoushan stone carving, the "Ximen School" (represented by Pan Yumao) and the "Dongmen School" (represented by Lin Qianpei), were formed. Lin Qingqing and Lin Youqing, the famous successors in modern times, are known as "Ximen Qing" and "Dongmen Qing" respectively.

Since the late Qing Dynasty, the art and techniques of Shoushan stone carving have made great progress. That is, the simple techniques have developed into fine reliefs, high reliefs, hollow carvings, openwork carvings and round carvings, etc.; the varieties have gradually increased, from funerary objects, Buddhist supplies, and seal buttons to various figures, landscapes, birds and beasts, flowers, melons, etc. Fruit, utensils, etc. As a result, Shoushan stone carvings have become a Fujian treasure appreciated by connoisseurs and collectors at home and abroad.

Utilizing the natural color of the stone to carve works that match the shape and color is the main artistic feature of Shoushan stone carving. There is a saying in the Shoushan stone carving circle that "one equals nine works", which is one of the important creative experiences of Shoushan stone carving. This means that artists must carefully examine the stone quality, stone grain, stone shape and stone color, and accordingly choose a suitable theme and determine the preliminary shape, that is, "applying techniques according to the material." This kind of thinking is different from the conception methods of other painters and sculptors. It can be said that Shoushan stone carving art is a special art, a comprehensive reflection of plastic art, color art, knife art and technical art.

As a raw stone (natural stone), Shoushan Stone is already extremely warm and gorgeous. After being honed and carved by carvers, it has become an ingenious and uncanny work of art.
