Anhui University is a national "double first-class" university, jointly established by the People's Government of Anhui Province and the Ministry of Education, and is a key comprehensive university in Anhui Province.

As the beginning of modern higher education in Anhui, the school was founded in Anqing, the then provincial capital, in 1928.

During the Anti-Japanese War, the school was forced to move westward and dispersed for a time. In 1946, it was reestablished as National Anhui University.
