The agave has a hardy vitality, which of course means that it can tolerate harsher environments. In the south, even when the winter cold front comes, as long as there is enough sunlight, the agave can adapt. The lowest temperature at which agave can grow is around 7 degrees Celsius.

British residents of agave dormant for several years after the sudden rapid growth

The giant agave, which is native to the deserts of Mexico, Texas and Arizona, far from here, is also known as the "plant of the century" because it can bloom, grow and die so quickly after decades of dormancy.

Flowering agave is very rare in the UK, and there have been only a handful in the last 20 years, with the first agave to flower since 2001 appearing in 2015.

Mrs Hardy said the agave had been in the garden when she moved here in 2012, and was probably planted by the previous owners 18 years ago. She has never watered it, except to keep it warm with a blanket during a particularly harsh winter. Visitors often stop by to take photos, and the agave even has its own Instagram account.
