Characteristics
The bluegill has a long, slightly cylindrical body, with a laterally flattened tail, a rounded abdomen, and no ventral ribs. The head is slightly flattened and the tail is laterally compressed. The mouth is terminal and curved. The upper jaw is slightly longer than the lower jaw. No whiskers. Hypopharyngeal teeth 1 row, molar-like, chewing surface smooth, without grooves. Dorsal and anal fins without hard spines, dorsal fin opposite to ventral fin. The dorsal and upper part of the body is greenish-black, the abdomen is grayish-white, and all fins are grayish-black.The body is cylindrical. The abdomen is flat and rounded, without ventral ribs. The tail is slightly flattened laterally. The muzzle is blunt, but more pointed than that of the grass carp. The posterior end of the maxilla extends below the anterior margin of the eye. Eye intervals about 3.5 times the diameter of the eye. Gill rakers 15-21, short, papillate. Pharyngeal teeth in one row,4(5)/5(4), generally asymmetrical from side to side, teeth broad, molar. Scales large, rounded. Lateral line scales 39-45; body greenish black, darker dorsally; fins grayish black, even fins especially dark.
