The broom and the dustpan are a set, and in some parts of the South they are called handfuls of dustpans, which are shovel-like implements. The broom is used to sweep up garbage and the dustpan is used to collect and transport garbage, but there are many dialects across the country that call them different names, such as handful, ash handful, handful of skips, garbage shovel, ash bucket, and so on.
The broom originated in China, and legend has it that in the Xia Dynasty 4,000 years ago, a man named Shaokang made the first broom out of pheasant feathers, which is also the origin of the chicken feather duster. Since chicken feathers were too soft and not resistant to wear and tear, Shaokang switched to bamboo strips, grass blades and other materials, transforming the chicken feather duster into a durable broom.
Brooms have been used in China for at least 4,000 years, but the size and materials haven't changed much, and with technological advances came brooms made of plastic.
