China's National Games are held every four years.
The National Games are held once every four years, usually around the Olympic year. The first nine National Games were held alternately by Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong.In early 2001, the General Office of the State Council formally issued a letter on the removal of the restriction on the National Games to be held alternately by Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong.On August 16, 2011, Tianjin was awarded the hosting right of the Thirteenth National Games in 2017 after three rounds of secret ballots.
The National Games are the highest level and largest comprehensive games in China. The competition programs of the National Games are basically the same as those of the Olympic Games except for wushu, and its original intention was to train newcomers and select talents for the country's Olympic strategy.

On December 29, 2015, the State Council formally approved and agreed that Shaanxi Province to host the 14th National Games in 2021. In order to do a good job of preparation, in July 2016, the Shaanxi Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government Office issued the "Overall Work Program of the 14th National Games".
In September, the Shaanxi Provincial Government held the Inaugural Meeting and the First Working Meeting of the Shaanxi Provincial Preparatory Committee for the 14th National Games, and formed the Preparatory Committee headed by the governor.
On September 8, 2017, at the closing ceremony of the National Games in Tianjin, Shaanxi Province took over the flag of the Games, marking the entry of the 14th National Games into Shaanxi time.
The 14th National Games will be held from Sept. 15 to Sept. 27, 2021, and the 11th National Games for the Disabled and the 8th Special Olympics will be held from Oct. 22 to Oct. 29, 2021, in Shaanxi Province.
