Northern Fujian is the earliest inland hinterland developed in Fujian, where ancient Vietnamese lived in the Neolithic Age.

Northern Fujian dialect, represented by Jian 'ou dialect, is distributed in Jianxi Valley, including eight counties (cities, districts) such as Jian 'ou, Jianyang, Wuyishan, Songxi, Zhenghe, Pucheng South, Nanping North and Shunchang East, as well as a small part of the western border of Zhouning and Pingnan counties in Ningde area and a small part of Taiwan Province Province. Except Taiwan Province Province, this area has generally been under the jurisdiction of Jianzhou and Jianning since the Tang and Song Dynasties.
In the northern Fujian dialect area, there are other alienated northern Fujian dialects, such as Shaowu dialect, Wuhua Pucheng dialect, and northern dialect Nanping Tuguan dialect.
