Egg yolk, also known as Xiantao, is a perennial plant belonging to the genus Egg yolk in the family Caprifoliaceae. The tree is about 6m high, with alternate leaves, narrow oval leaves and small white flowers, which are clustered in the axils of leaves.
The fruit is spherical, green when immature, yellow-green to orange-yellow when mature, smooth, thin-skinned, orange-yellow pulp, rich in starch, egg yolk-like texture and aroma, low water content and slightly sweet taste. Its taste is between sweet potato and durian. Seeds usually 1 to 2, suborbicular or elliptic.
Egg yolk is native to Cuba and tropical North America, mainly distributed in Central and South America, northeastern India, northern Myanmar, Viet Nam, Cambodia, Thailand and southern China. China was introduced in 1930s and cultivated in Guangzhou in 1950s. China, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Yunnan, Fujian and other tropical and sub-tropical areas have sporadic cultivation.
