Silverfish (salangid) is a freshwater fish that survives and is distributed in both brackish and freshwater in East Asia, and is known as a delicacy in China. The body is slender and salmon-like, without scales or with fine scales. Later on, they gradually choose larger and easily available zooplankton to feed on, in the order of unsegmented larvae, copepod larvae, branchiopods and copepod adults. The silverfish is a carnivorous fish and feeds mainly on small fishes and shrimps.

Reproductive Habits

In ponds, silverfish can develop to gonadal maturity and spawn on their own. Gonadal development and spawning characteristics are basically the same as in natural waters. In the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the peak spawning period is late December to late January. In hard-bottomed ponds with water plants, spawning is more concentrated, and the fertilization rate can reach 80%-
