China's innovation: In corn and other crops, the starch synthesis and accumulation of natural photosynthesis involves more than 60 biochemical reactions and complex physiological regulation, and the theoretical energy conversion efficiency is about 2%. Through years of research, the research team of Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biology of Chinese Academy of Sciences joined hands with Dalian Institute of Chemical Technology.
The energy conversion mode of "light energy-electric energy-chemical energy" was realized by coupling chemical catalysis and biocatalysis module systems in a building block way, and an artificial way from carbon dioxide to starch synthesis was successfully constructed with only 1 1 step.
Scientific and technical background:
Starch is the most important component of grain and an important industrial raw material. Starch is mainly produced by fixing carbon dioxide by natural photosynthesis in crops such as corn. The synthesis and accumulation of starch involves more than 60 metabolic reactions and complex physiological regulation, and the theoretical energy conversion efficiency is only about 2%.
Planting crops usually takes a long time and requires a lot of land, fresh water and other agricultural means of production, such as fertilizers and pesticides. Food crisis and climate change are major challenges facing mankind, and the sustainable supply of food starch and the transformation and utilization of carbon dioxide are the strategic direction of scientific and technological innovation in the world today.
