The origin of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day in the modern sense originated in the United States. The earliest initiator of modern Mother's Day was American woman Anna Marie Jarvis. Her mother, Mrs. Jarvis, served in the Army Medical Corps during the Civil War. After the war, Mrs. Jarvis came up with the idea of ??setting up a memorial day for mothers who lost their children in the war, but it was not realized during her lifetime.

In 1907, which happened to be the second anniversary of Mrs. Jarvis’s death, one of her daughters, Anna Jarvis, remembered her mother’s last wish and wrote to Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Guild Church, requesting a special memorial service for her mother on the 2nd anniversary of her death. Her mother served the church's Sunday school for more than 20 years during her lifetime.

The church agreed and held a liturgy for the mothers on May 12 of that year. The following year, the church declared the Sunday of the week of Jarvis's mother's death - the second week of May - as Mother's Day.

But Anna did not stop there. Jarvis organized a Mother's Day Committee and began a large-scale publicity campaign calling for Mother's Day to be designated as a legal holiday.

Finally, with her continuous efforts, in 1908, Philadelphia held a Mother's Day event imitating the memorial ceremony at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church, which received an overwhelming response. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state in the United States to celebrate Mother's Day.
