When painting bamboo in traditional Chinese painting, you must first pay attention to the structure, and secondly, pay attention to the use of brushes. The so-called Gezi, Jiezi, Fenzi, Pofenzi, etc. are the rules summarized by the ancients. The leaves must be drawn in groups, otherwise they will be messy. Each group must not only conform to the growth pattern of leaves, but also be beautifully organized. The first taboo is solitary, the second taboo is standing side by side, the third taboo is like a fork, the fourth taboo is like a well, and the fifth taboo is like a finger or a dragonfly.

When painting bamboo leaves, the strokes should be strong and sharp. When you press hard, the brush will come out. Once you touch it, it will pass, and there will be no delay in leaving. The direction should be changed at any time according to the growth trend of the leaves. Avoid peach, reed, and willow. When the stroke reaches the tip of the leaf, lift the wrist naturally, or use the tip of the pen to bring out the sharp edge. Forward and partial fronts can be applied intermittently, high and low, tilted, turned and pitched, all of which must be achieved naturally in the fast, slow and slow strokes, and between the thick and light shades of ink.

In spring, the leaves are tender and upward, while in summer, they are under heavy shade and bend down. The dew, the rain, the wind, and the snow all show how low they are. You must observe carefully and practice repeatedly before you can master it.

When you first learn, you should practice branch by branch. The leaves should be of the same color. If there are alternating dark and light leaves on one branch, it will be easy to be messy. Use dense ink for nearby branches and leaves, and light ink for distant branches or new branches and leaves later. But it is not easy to use thirsty ink to draw bamboo leaves.

In flower and bird paintings, you can use red bamboo or white bamboo, or use cyan, azurite, or stone green to draw bamboo.
