The tradition of Chinese poetry advocates subtlety. In the Song Dynasty, the poet Yan Yu put forward the four taboos of poetic composition: "The language should not be straight, the meaning should not be shallow. The pulse is not to be exposed, and the flavor is not to be short." The Qing Dynasty poet Shih Tien-hua also said that poems should be "avoiding straightness and emphasizing curvature". However, Li Bai's "Gift to Wang Lun" is characterized by frankness and directness, with very little subtlety. His "language is straight", his "vein is exposed", and his "meaning" is not shallow, but more flavorful. Ancient people wrote poems, generally taboo in the poem directly call the name, thought tasteless. And "give Wang Lun" from the poet called his own name to start, but also to address each other's name as the end, but appears to be frank, friendly and free, very flavorful.

The first half of the poem is a narrative, depicting a farewell scene. The first line starts with the departing person, showing Li Bai bidding farewell to the people in the boat which is about to leave the shore. The words "by boat" indicate that he is following the waterway. The phrase "about to leave" indicates that the boat is about to depart. The next line is about the people who are sending off the boat. This sentence is not as straightforward as the first, but uses a twisted style, saying only that they heard "the sound of treading songs". A group of villagers stepped on the ground for the beat, walking and singing to see off the boat. This seems to be out of Li Bai's expectation, so he said "suddenly heard" instead of "distantly heard". Although this poem is more subtle, only heard his voice, do not see his person, but the person has been called out. Wang Lun's arrival is indeed unexpected. The voice is heard before the person arrives. This kind of farewell, side show that Li Bai and Wang Lun, the two friends are the same people who are not bound by common courtesy, happy and free.

The second half of the poem is lyrical. The third line follows the first line, further explaining that the boat is in the Peach Blossom Pond. "Thousands of feet deep" not only depicts the characteristics of the pool, but also for the concluding sentence of the ambush. The water of the Peach Blossom Pond is so deep and exquisite that it touches the feelings of the departed, unforgettable Wang Lun's deep love and affection, and the deep water and deep feelings are naturally connected. The final sentence bursts out "not as good as Wang Lun sent me love", to compare the image of the material approach to express the sincere and pure deep feelings. The water in the pool is already "a thousand feet deep", so Wang Lun's sent Li Bai's. love must be even deeper. This sentence is intriguing. Here is wonderful in the "less than" two words, good is good in not using a metaphor and the use of comparative techniques, change the intangible friendship for a vivid image, ethereal and aftertaste, natural and true love. The poet is very touched, so with "Peach Blossom Pond water depth of a thousand feet, less than Wanglun sent me love" two lines of poetry to praise Wanglun on the poet's admiration and love, but also expresses Li Bai on Wanglun's deep friendship.

Li Bai has written hundreds of poems on wine, and he has traveled to famous mountains all his life. According to Yuan Mei's "Supplement to the Garden of Poetry", a stranger, Wang Lun, wrote a letter to Li Bai, inviting him to travel to Jingxian County (present-day southern Anhui Province), and wrote enthusiastically: "Mr. good travel? There are ten miles of peach blossoms in this place. This place has ten thousand hotels. "Li Bai went there gladly. See Wang Lun is a Jingchuan gentleman, who is hospitable and uninhibited. He asked where the Peach Garden Restaurant was. Wang Lun said: "Peach Blossom, the name of the pool, there is no peach blossom; Wanjia, the owner of the store surnamed Wan also, there is no Wanjia Hotel. "Li Bai laughed. Stay for a few days to leave, on the way out, wrote the above poem to say goodbye.

Obviously, this poem is Li Bai improvised off the tongue, natural into the wonderful, and therefore has always been recited. However, also because it is as natural as life, people often know that the wonderful but do not know the so wonderful. In the three or four lines of the poem, there is still a little comment from later poets, but in the first two lines of the colloquial and straightforward narration, it is impossible to tell why. In fact, combined with the above context, the first two lines are also written extremely successful.

"Li Bai in a boat will want to go", is to say that I am about to leave the Peach Blossom Pool by boat. That sound mouth language is simply unthinking, smooth mouth outflow, showing the dashing demeanor of riding the boat and returning from the pleasure.

"Suddenly heard the sound of singing on the shore", "suddenly heard" two words indicate that Wang Lun's arrival, is really unexpected. People have not yet arrived and the sound first heard, from the enthusiastic singing, Li Bai expected that must be Wang Lun rushed to send off.

Such a farewell, side show that Li Bai and Wang Lun these two friends are the same is not bound by the rituals, happy and free people. In the mountain villages and wilderness, there is no upper-class society to send and welcome that set of cumbersome etiquette, it seems, Li Bai left, Wang Lun is not at home. When Wang Lun came back to learn that Li Bai had gone, immediately rushed to the ferry with wine to say goodbye. Li Bai certainly free and uninhibited without saying goodbye, not polite; Wang Lun song to send off, but also bold and enthusiastic, do not make a child to dip the towel attitude. Just fourteen words to write out the character of the two optimists and their friendship without formalities.

Perhaps it is because the two men's thoughts and temperaments are compatible, Li Bai cited as the same tone, and cherished Wang Lun's friendship. The love, so to the beautiful scenery of the peach blossom pool in front of him, y chanted:

"Peach blossom pool water depth of a thousand feet, less than Wang Lun sent me love."

Combined with this place, this situation, these two lines of the poem also as off the cuff, the feelings of true and natural. Verbal language, eye outlook, own a kind of naive natural interest, vaguely make people see the great poet bold and unrestrained personality. Therefore, the Qing Shen Deqian said: "If you say that the love of Wang Lun, compared to a thousand feet of water in the pool, it is ordinary language. Ancient people writing poems, generally taboo in the poem directly called names, thought tasteless. This poem, however, begins by calling his name and ends by calling the other's name, but it appears to be frank, cordial and spontaneous, and it is very flavorful.

"Water out of hibiscus, natural to carve", the later loved Li Bai's words to evaluate Li Bai's poetry, is very insightful. It is true that Li Bai improvised his poems, and he appeared to be effortless in his speech. His feelings are unrestrained, direct expression of his feelings, naive and natural, without any pretense, but has a kind of unanticipated yet wonderful. "It seems to be the most extraordinary", as the saying goes, the most dazzling, to the plain, this kind of work is not easy to learn. The above "Wang Lun" is a concentrated expression of Li Bai's natural and subtle style of poetry.
