Females have a yellow longitudinal band extending dorsally to the upper lobe of the caudal fin, and a yellow longitudinal band in the lower lobe; males do not have this yellow longitudinal band, but the ventral side of the head is yellowish, and the base of the dorsal-fin cartilage is marked with a dark purple spot.

Distribution of fish in the Indian Ocean, the western Pacific Ocean waters, mainly inhabiting the continental shelf outside the reef area, usually in groups on the outer reef slopes. It feeds on plankton, crustaceans and fish eggs.
