Qinghai Lake is the largest inland saltwater lake in China and the highest saltwater lake in the world. It is located in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and is surrounded by mountains on all sides. The scenery of Qinghai Lake is spectacular and it is one of the favorite destinations for travelers.
If you have enough time and budget, it is recommended that you choose the Great Loop Route. This route is about 400 kilometers and takes at least 2-3 days to complete. You will cross grasslands, deserts and highland lakes and enjoy the most beautiful scenery of Qinghai Lake. The route of the Great Circuit will pass through Mangya and Qilian Mountains, then go around Qinghai Lake and finally return to Xining City. You can also visit local temples, villages and towns to learn about the local culture and history. On the Great Circuit, you can see the unique ecological environment of the Tibetan Plateau and experience its mystery and beauty. Attractions on the Great Circuit include Chaka Salt Lake, Tal Temple, Xiahe Grassland, Horseshoe Temple, Qinghai Lake Riding and Chaka Town.
If your time and budget are limited, you can choose the small loop route. This route is about 200 kilometers long and requires at least 1-2 days to complete. The route of the mini loop is in the northwest corner of Qinghai Lake, from Xining to Qinghai Lake and then back to Xining City. You will see most of the scenery of Qinghai Lake and visit some local attractions and villages. However, you will miss some of the most beautiful sights and experiences. Some of the attractions on the mini loop include Chaka Mountain, Chaka Salt Lake, and Qinghai Lake Riding.
No matter which route you choose, you need to pay attention to plateau reaction and weather changes. Please keep an eye on the weather forecast and bring enough clothes and medicines with you. During the tour, you can try local food, such as Qinghai beef noodles, tsampa, mutton kebabs, yogurt, Qinghai cakes and so on.
