Tu Su is the name of a thatched cottage, according to the records in "Years of Hua Ji Li" written by Han E in the Tang Dynasty. It is said that a famous doctor who lived in this monastery in ancient times gave a pack of herbs to every family nearby on New Year's Eve, and told them to sew them in cloth bags and throw them into the well. On New Year's Day, they would draw well water and drink a glass of wine, so that they would not get the plague in one year. People got this prescription, but they didn't know the name of the imperial doctor, so they had to name this medicinal liquor after the name of Tu Su. In fact, Tu Su is not the proper name of a thatched cottage. According to the Popular Literature of the Han Dynasty, all thatched cottages are called patent Sue. As for what medicine was put in Tu Su's wine, according to The Record of Jingchu's Age, which was observed by people in the Liang Dynasty, Dong Xun, the negotiator of the Northern Wei Dynasty, said that the medicinal liquor drunk on New Year's Day in ancient folk customs contained the powder of pepper.
The so-called Tu Su wine is actually a kind of pepper wine. Dong Xun also talked about the habit of drinking Tu Su wine, that is, the youngest member of the family drinks it first, and the second one comes down, and the older one drinks it later. The reason is that the child has increased by one year in the New Year, so everyone should congratulate him. The old people's life is one year less in the New Year, so it means wishing them a long life if they drink it after a while. This custom of drinking Tu Su wine after drinking less has been passed down to future generations. Gu Zhu, a poet in the Tang Dynasty, said in his poem "The Year of the Year": "I don't think it's even sadder for a veteran to join hands with several people. I will also be lonely and ashamed, and I will let Tu Su be a teenager. " Su Zhe, a writer in the Song Dynasty, wrote a poem "Except for Japan": "I drink Tu Su at last every year, but I don't feel that I have been over 70 years."
