Deciduous or semi-evergreen vine. Palmately compound leaves alternate, leaflets 5, obovate or long obovate, 3-6cm long, apex rounded, retuse or mucronate, entire. Flowers unisexual and homogamous, axillary in racemes; female flowers borne on upper part of inflorescences, tepals 3, lilac, stamens 6, female flowers borne on lower part of inflorescences, tepals 3, staminodes 6, pistils 6. Fruits fleshy, long ellipsoid, rounded at both ends, dehiscing along the ventral suture line at maturity. Flowering April to May, fruiting in August.
