What are the symptoms of silkworm bean disease?
Analysis of illness: the clinical manifestations of silkworm bean disease are roughly the same as those of general hemolytic anemia. Can be divided into neonatal jaundice, bean disease, drug-induced hemolysis, infectious hemolysis, non-spherical hemolytic anemia and other clinical types. The severity of the clinical manifestations of this disease is different. Most patients, especially female heterozygotes, usually have no symptoms, and some patients may show symptoms of chronic hemolytic anemia. Acute hemolytic reactions such as hemoglobinuria, jaundice and anemia are often induced by eating broad beans, taking or contacting certain drugs and infections. Severe acute hemolytic anemia induced by G6PD deficiency may lead to liver, kidney or heart failure or even death due to excessive destruction of red blood cells. In 1960s, during the broad bean harvest season, G6PD deficiency broke out in Xingning, Guangdong, causing many patients to die. G6PD deficiency is the main cause of neonatal pathological jaundice. According to a statistic of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences, about 50% of newborns with G6PD deficiency will develop neonatal jaundice, of which about 12% can develop into nuclear jaundice, leading to brain damage and mental retardation.
