Ewha Womans University (Korean: / Ewha Womans University, English: Ewha Womans University, referred to as "Ewha University") is one of the oldest universities in Seoul, South Korea, was founded in the early 1887, is the first women's university in South Korea. It is the first women's university in Korea. It was originally called Ewha Academy, named by King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty in honor of the wife of Dr. Scranton, a Methodist doctor who was the first to establish women's education in Korea, and was renamed Ewha Womans University in 1948. Ewha Womans University is also considered to be the best women's university in Korea. Located in Daehyeon-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, the university still has many old buildings, the most representative of which is the Welch-Ryang Auditorium (originally a Christian church) at the entrance of the university. The university currently has 14 colleges, 67 departments and majors, and an additional School of International Education.
