Is the spleen the pancreas?

The spleen is not the pancreas. The spleen and pancreas are two organs.

The spleen is located in the upper left side of the abdominal cavity. It is flat and oval in shape, dark red, soft and brittle. It can easily rupture and bleed when the area is violently affected. The spleen is located between the fundus of the stomach and the diaphragm in the left quarter rib area, just opposite the 9th to 11th ribs, and its long axis is consistent with the 10th rib.

The pancreatic duct is located in the pancreatic parenchyma and runs in line with the long axis of the pancreas. It runs from the tail of the pancreas through the body of the pancreas to the head of the pancreas, receiving many interlobular ducts along the way, and finally ends at the wall of the descending duodenum. It merges with the common bile duct to form the hepatopancreatic ampulla, which opens into the duodenal papilla.

Extended information

The parenchyma of the spleen is divided into three parts: white pulp, red pulp and marginal zone. The white pulp is composed of dense lymphocytes and is the main site where specific immunity occurs in the body.

When antigens invade the spleen and cause a humoral immune response, white pulp endolymphatic nodules will increase in large numbers. The red pulp is mainly composed of splenic sinusoids and splenic cords. The slow blood flow in the red pulp makes it possible for full contact between antigens and phagocytes, and is the main place where immune cells undergo phagocytosis.

The marginal zone (MZ) is located at the junction of the red pulp and the white pulp. The lymphocytes in this area are sparser than the white pulp. They are mainly B cells, but there are more macrophages (Mφ). The spleen is an important site for capturing antigens, recognizing antigens and inducing immune responses.
