Some normal people have a bowel movement only once a day but do not feel any discomfort. This situation is not considered constipation. Constipation can be divided into two categories: acute and chronic. Acute constipation is caused by acute diseases such as intestinal obstruction, intestinal paralysis, acute peritonitis, and cerebrovascular accidents; the causes of chronic constipation are more complex and generally have no obvious symptoms. According to the classification of the onset site, it can be divided into two types: ① Colonic constipation. Constipation caused by mechanical obstruction inside and outside the colon is called mechanical constipation. Constipation caused by weakened or lost colonic peristaltic function is called asthenic constipation. Constipation caused by spasm of intestinal smooth muscle is called spastic constipation. ② Rectal constipation. Fecal mass accumulates in the rectum due to reduced sensitivity of the rectal mucosal receptors. Seen in rectal cancer, perianal diseases, etc. Habitual constipation is more common in middle-aged and elderly women and multiparous women.
According to traditional Chinese medicine, constipation is mainly caused by internal knots of dryness and heat, stagnation of Qi, insufficient body fluids, and deficiency and coldness of the spleen and kidneys.
1. Internal knots caused by dryness and heat. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that overeating spicy food and taking warm and tonic products can cause excessive yang and burn the yin; after a febrile disease, residual heat lingers in the intestines and stomach, consuming body fluids; or damp-heat bets. The large intestine makes the intestines dry and hot, damaging body fluids and causing constipation. This constipation is also called heat constipation.
2. Qi stagnation caused by emotional discomfort, worry, long periods of sitting and inactivity, bed rest due to long-term illness, etc. leads to failure of conduction in the large intestine and stagnation of dregs, resulting in secret knots. This is the so-called "qi is stagnant and things cannot move". The characteristic of this type is that the feces is not dry but difficult to pass, so it is also called Qi constipation.
3. Insufficient body fluids: chronic illness, postpartum, old age, physical weakness, deficiency of Qi and blood; internal injuries to the spleen and stomach, less drinking water, insufficient sources of metabolization, excessive sweating during illness, diarrhea and yin damage, etc. Qi deficiency means that the large intestine is unable to transmit food; blood deficiency and body fluid deficiency cause the large intestine to lose moisture and nutrients, making the intestines dry and constipation difficult and astringent, so it is called deficiency secretion.
4. The spleen and kidneys are deficient and cold due to old age and long-term disease, the kidney yang is deficient and the yang qi is not transported, and the yin evil condenses; or the spleen yang is insufficient and is attacked by the cold, resulting in the spleen and kidney yang failure. If the warm light is not enough, the cold and condensed qi will be stagnant, the intestinal transmission will be weak, and the stool will be difficult, which is called cold secretion. 1.1 A cup of warm water, drink it on an empty stomach every morning after getting up.
