Kyoho grapes have strong adaptability, strong disease resistance, and certain cold resistance. They can be grown in Shandong and overwinter on shelves without burying branches in soil. It likes big fat and water to grow. The fruit has large ears and grains, and the maturity period is around late August. The grape fruit is purple-black when mature, with thick skin, lots of fruit powder, soft flesh, sweet and juicy taste, and a strawberry aroma. Suitable for garden planting.
There are three ways to raise Kyoho grape seedlings, one is sowing and grafting, the other is cutting, and the third is layering.
Sowing and grafting: Kyoho grapes can be sown to raise seedlings, but seeding and breeding are seedlings, which cannot fully maintain the excellent characteristics of the original variety. They are mainly used as rootstocks for grafting and propagation. Seedlings with more developed root systems and stronger growth than cuttings can be used as grafting rootstocks to extend the growth and fruiting periods of the plants.
After the grapes mature in autumn, the collected grape seeds can be removed with water to remove the seed coat juice, dried in the shade and stored in a low temperature and dry place.
Grape seeds can be sown in early spring from March to April. Two months before sowing, mix the grape seeds with river sand and keep the temperature at a low temperature of -3℃~5℃. The sandy soil needs Keep it moist and the seeds will mature in about 60 days. When the weather gets warmer, you can plant them directly in the soil.
After the seedlings grow for one year, they can be used as grafting rootstocks. In March and April in spring, before the plants germinate, select Kyoho grape plants that have entered the fruiting period, and cut them close to the base and ensure the degree of lignification. Tall, strong branches of the current year with full buds are used as scions. After the scion is cut, the interval should not be too long. The new seedlings bred by grafting can maintain the excellent character of Kyoho grapes and prevent premature plant aging.
Cutting propagation is the most important method of raising seedlings of Kyoho grape. Cuttings can be divided into hard branch cuttings and green branch cuttings. The best time for hard branch cuttings is from late March to mid-to-late April in spring, and for green branch cuttings in June and July. After the beginning of winter, select fully mature branches with full bud eyes. Each cutting needs to retain 5-6 bud eyes. Cut off the secondary shoots and tendrils, tie them into bundles, and store them in a ditch 1-2 meters wide and 1-1.5 meters deep. It needs to be placed upright, then filled with wet sand and covered. It should be noted that a vent hole should be left every 2 meters in the grass handle to facilitate the breathing of the cuttings. Cuttings can be taken after spring.
Third, layering propagation is the main method for making grape bonsai. You can select strong fruit branches of Kyoho grape and put them into flower pots. After they bloom and bear fruit, gradually peel off the bark outside the bottom of the flower pot. It is appropriate to cut to the depth of the xylem, and then keep two-thirds of it until the fruit swells. After that, keep one third of the fruit. When the fruit is fully mature, you can cut it off and separate it from the mother plant to enjoy as a bonsai. However, the second one will not bear fruit and needs to be converted from potted to ground planting.
