The ash tree (Fraxinus chinensis Roxb.) was named because of the ash insects that live on the tree. The ash tree is also a sand-fixing tree species. It is the general name of the ash plant in the family Oleaceae, also known as ash (cén). There are about 70 species in this genus, mainly distributed in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, with a few extending southward to the tropics. There are about 20 species of ash trees in China. The wood is tough and resistant to water and moisture, and is used to make furniture, farm tools, plywood, etc.; the branches can be made into baskets; the bark is called "Qinpi" and is used as a heat-clearing medicine in traditional Chinese medicine.
