Chaoshan is not a city, but a region, which is located in the southeast coast of Guangdong Province, including Shantou, Chaozhou, Jieyang and Shanwei, and does not belong to a province or city. Chaoshan area is the birthplace and prosperous place of Chaoshan culture, which is popular in Chaozhou dialect. Chaoshan culture is the Han nationality whose mother tongue is Chaoshan dialect, and it is one of the locals in Guangdong, Hongkong, Macau and Taiwan Province provinces on the southern coast of China. Chaoshan area is also a famous hometown of overseas Chinese, compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and the hometown of more than 30 million overseas Chaoshan people. Shantou is an important port city along the southeast coast of China and an important gateway to the Maritime Silk Road.
