The Volvo logo consists of a three-part graphic: part of a circle representing Mars, the Roman god of war, which is the ancient chemical symbol for the element iron - and a circle with an arrow inside it, with the arrow pointing diagonally to the upper right corner. Counted as one of the oldest and most common trademarks in Western civilization, it originated during the time of the Roman Empire as a symbol of three different concepts: Mars, the Roman god of war, and male masculinity, and thus in turn embodies the original connection between Mars and the iron that was used to make most of the weapons of the time. Because of this, the logo has long been seen as a symbol of the iron and steel industry by countries around the world, including Sweden. The reason why the brand logo representing iron is used on the car is to remind people of the Swedish steel industry with its glorious tradition and its steel-like strength.
