Extended data:
The origin of eighteen arhats:
Eighteen arhats evolved from sixteen arhats. Sixteen arhats are disciples of Sakyamuni. According to the Buddhist scriptures, they were instructed by the Buddha not to enter nirvana, to live in the world forever, and to be blessed by the world. After Buddhism spread to China, the Sixteen Arhats became the theme of artists' creation, and later evolved into the Eighteen Arhats.
The earliest known statue of eighteen arhats was painted by Zhang Xuan and Guan Xiu of the Five Dynasties. Later, Song Su Dongpo wrote 18 praises for the two paintings respectively, and marked the name of Lohan in Guan Xiu. In addition, the eighteen arhats carved on the stone bed in the Golden Cave of Feilaifeng in Hangzhou are also works of the Song Dynasty.
After the Yuan Dynasty, there were more than eighteen arhats in the halls of various monasteries, and in the Buddhist world, the paintings and sculptures of arhats were mainly eighteen arhats. Since then, the 16 arhats have gradually become silent, and the 18 arhats have taken their place. The eighteen arhats enshrined in general temples refer to descending dragons, crouching tigers, laughing lions, riding elephants, sitting deer, cloth bags, plantains, long eyebrows, rejoicing, meditating, crossing rivers, exploring hands, toting towers, digging ears, guarding doors, having fun, lifting bowls and sitting quietly in arhats.
