Trees up to 20 meters high, diameter at breast height is 80 cm, winter buds are about 5 mm long, branchlets are grayish brown, stipules are oblong, and they are 10- 15 mm long, with long hairs and scaly glands. The leaves are oval to oblong, with a length of11-17cm and a width of 7cm. The top is short to taper, the base is nearly truncated or rounded, or the two sides are slightly bent inward to form an earlobe, and one side is often skewed and asymmetrical. The base of the new leaves is often narrow and the two sides are symmetrical, and the back of the leaves is covered with star-shaped fluff or becomes little because of hair shedding. Petiole length 1-2 cm. Male inflorescence is 10-20 cm long, and inflorescence axis is hairy; 3-5 flowers are clustered into clusters, female flowers 1-3 (-5) flowers are well developed, and the lower part of the style is hairy. The sharp spines of mature shell bucket are long and short, sparse and dense. When dense, the outer wall of shell bucket is completely covered, and when sparse, the outer wall is visible. The diameter of the shell bucket is 4.5-6.5 cm. Nuts are1.5-3cm high and1.8-3.5cm wide. The flowering period is April-June, and the fruiting period is August 8- 10/October.
