On April 18, 2018, in Qingdao, Shandong Province, law enforcement officers forcibly dismantled the last abalone pond in the waters east of the Taiwan Luhaiyu Hotel. At this point, the illegally built abalone breeding ponds in Qingdao from Tuandao to Shilaoren Qianhai bid farewell to the historical stage and returned a clean coastline to the citizens.
According to reports, villagers from Maidao Village built abalone breeding ponds in this sea area a long time ago. Since 2005, the municipal government has issued regulations. According to the marine functional zoning, from Tuandao to Shilaoren Breeding is prohibited within 1,500 meters of the coast, and sea cucumber and abalone ponds are not allowed to be built. After that, abalone ponds along Qingdao’s Qianhai coast were successively cleaned and demolished. The abalone pond near Haiyu Hotel was also demolished in 2015.
Due to the large number of abalone ponds here, the unfavorable tide at that time, and the short construction period, some remaining abalone pond dams remain in the reef area near the beach. Later, some people used the remaining dam body to repair and continue to raise abalone here.
According to calculations, it has been confirmed that there are as many as 8 remaining abalone ponds in this sea area, covering an area of ??about 5.5 acres. From a distance, the original natural scenery of the seaside has been divided into irregular "patches" by the abalone breeding ponds. The artificial dams have also destroyed the ecological environment along the coastal line. After this demolition, citizens and tourists no longer have to worry about being scolded by people looking at the abalone pond and being forced to stay away from the reef area when they go to sea.
