Annual creeping soft herb. Branches spreading, 8-20 cm tall, nearly bald or slightly woolly. Leaves alternate; leaf blade small, spatulate, 7-20 mm long, 3-5 mm wide, apex obtuse, base cuneate, margin sparsely dentate. Heads sessile, 3-4 mm in diam., axillary; involucral bracts ca. distichous, margins membranous; receptacle flat or slightly elevated; flowers polygamous, yellowish or yellowish-green, tubular; pistillate flowers at periphery of head, multiseriate, corolla short; bisexual flowers, several, at center of head, corolla campanulate, apical part 4-lobed; stamens 4, surrounding style, anthers short, base obtuse; stylar lobes short, obtuse or truncate Achenes 4-angled, ribbed. Achenes 4-angled, hairy on ribs, without crown hairs. Fl. 9~Nov.

Medicinal herb: dried whole grass, intertwined into clusters, gray-green or tan. The stem is thin and much branched, darker in color, brittle and easy to break, yellowish-white on the cross-section, with white pith in the center or day forming a cavity. Leaves are small, wrinkled, broken and incomplete, the complete leaf blade is spatulate, with 3~5 serrations on the edge, the leaf veins are not obvious, the texture is extremely brittle, easy to crumble off. Heads small, spherical, yellow or yellow-brown. Slightly fragrant, irritating on prolonged sniffing, bitter, slightly pungent flavor.
