The origin of the festival: Legend has it that Qu Yuan, a poet of the State of Chu during the Warring States period, jumped into the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month to kill himself, and the Dragon Boat Festival is also regarded as a festival in honor of Qu Yuan by the later generations; and it also commemorates Wu Zixu, Cao'e, and Jie Zi Tui, among other sayings. The origin of the Dragon Boat Festival covers ancient astrological culture, humanistic philosophy and other aspects, containing a profound and rich cultural connotation, in the development of the inheritance of a variety of folklore as a whole, due to the different regional cultures and the existence of customary content or details of the differences.
Traditional Folklore: Dragon Boat Customs: The Dragon Boat Customs are mainly picking dragon boats, sacrificing to the dragon, picking herbs, hanging moxa and calamus, sacrificing to the ancestors, washing the herbal water, playing the water at noon, dipping the water in the dragon boat, eating rice dumplings, releasing the paper kite, looking at the dragon boat, tying the five-color silk thread, fumigation of Cangzhu, wearing a scented bag and so on. Grill dragon boat activities in southern China along the coast is very prevalent, spread abroad by the people of various countries and the formation of international competitions.
World Non-Heritage Festivals: The Dragon Boat Festival is known as one of China's four major traditional festivals, along with the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival. Duanwu culture has a wide influence in the world, some countries and regions of the world also have activities to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. 2006 May, the state will be included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage list; since 2008, it has been listed as a national legal holiday. 2009 September, UNESCO formally approved its inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Duanwu Festival became China's first intangible cultural heritage on the world's list. The Dragon Boat Festival has become the first festival in China to be selected as one of the world's intangible cultural heritages.
