Next to the village, in a cottage in the forest, lived a little girl and her grandmother. Grandmother grew easy-to-grow vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, and carrots in a small field outside her home. There was also a strawberry plant, just one, growing peacefully by the door of the house. The little girl always asked her grandmother why there was such a strawberry plant. Grandma said that the seeds of the strawberry were a family heirloom, a treasure given to their ancestors by the gods long ago, so that a girl in their family could find a boy who loved her with a strawberry. And the one planted in front of the door was the little girl's.
Every day, the little girl would accompany her grandmother and take the vegetables to the village market to sell them. They only sold vegetables, not strawberries, although their strawberries grew quickly and they could harvest big, sweet, red strawberries every month, but they didn't sell them. In fact, no one in the village even knew what strawberries were, and so they were the little girl's most precious and unique treasure. Every harvest, the little girl shared with her grandmother, and when she had to go to the market, she would grab a few strawberries and put them in the pocket of her dress and eat them when she was bored. Grandma and strawberries, has been the little girl's all.
