How to treat boils

Hot compress or physical therapy (diathermy, infrared or ultrashort wave) can be used for inflammatory nodules, or topical antibiotic ointment, such as mupirocin ointment, can be used. When there is a pus head, carbolic acid can be applied on the top. When there are fluctuations, incision and drainage should be done as soon as possible. Immature boils should not be squeezed to avoid spreading the infection.

Systemic antibiotics should be used in the following four situations:

1. Folliculitis is located around the nose, nasal cavity or external auditory canal.

2. Large or recurrent boils.

3. There is cellulitis around the skin lesions.

4. The skin lesions do not respond to local treatment.

Drugs sensitive to pathogenic bacteria such as penicillin, cephalosporins, macrolides and clindamycin should be given.
