1. Appearance characteristics
The kapok tree is a deciduous tree, about 25 meters high, with gray bark. The trunk of young trees usually has conical thick thorns and its branches are relatively flat. The leaves of kapok are palmately compound, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 1 ~ 16 cm long and 3.5 ~ 5.5 cm wide, and both sides are hairless and smooth.
2. Flower characteristics
The flowers of kapok are solitary at the top of branches, generally red or orange-red, with a diameter of about 1 cm. They usually bloom from March to April every year and have great ornamental value during flowering. In addition, kapok trees generally grow leaves first and then bloom, and there will be no leaves when flowering.
3. Fruit characteristics
After withering, kapok will grow an oval capsule, which contains many seeds and is inverted oval. When the fruit ripens in summer, the pod will crack and the fruit will drift with the wind. Generally, there will be a black seed hidden in the cotton wadding group, and it will take root when it meets wet soil.
4. Growth habits
Kapok trees have strong adaptability to the environment, generally grow in dry-hot valleys and savannahs below 14 ~ 17 meters above sea level, and can also be planted as street trees. It can germinate and grow in harsh environment. Most of them are distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan, Hainan, Guangxi, Fujian, Guizhou and other regions in China.
