This is a story of first love that takes place in the early 1970s. The heroine of the story, Jing Qiu (Zhou Dongyu), is a student in the city who is about to graduate from high school. She follows an educational revolutionary practice group to a place called Xiping Village to collect stories of revolutionary traditions and write new educational materials.

Jing Qiu is assigned to stay at the house of village head Zhang. Three times a day, the headman's family has a young man called "Lao San" (Dou Snapdragon) come to dinner, who turns out to be a member of the geological exploration team stationed nearby. Jingqiu's mother found out about their love affair and hoped that the two young people would consider it carefully. Lao San, who suffers from leukemia, hid his condition and disappeared from Jingqiu's life for the sake of her future.

Jing Qiu's search for the old man has been a long time coming, and when she saw him again, she was already on his deathbed.
